Music Ministry

Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?

As a parish community at ICSJ, we know each other, we give, and we sing! We are a community that greets each other, gathers together in fellowship, gives of our time and talent, and recognizes music as a valued and integral part of our liturgical worship and prayer. The choirs of ICSJ Parish are dedicated to excellence in liturgical music and seek to inspire and lead the congregation each Sunday in a variety of hymns, songs, and choral music. Each choir described below has a unique role in the life of the parish. For more information and to become involved as a choir member, cantor, or instrumentalist, contact Director of Music Kate Ryan* or submit the Music Ministry Information Form.

The Choirs of ICSJ Parish

The Liturgical Choir

The ICSJ Parish Liturgical Choir sings at the St. Joseph Church 11:00 a.m. liturgy each Sunday. In addition to leading the congregation in song, this ensemble sings a variety of challenging repertoire in all styles. Accompanied by piano, flute, percussion, and other instruments, this ensemble sings a variety of energetic repertoire every Sunday. The Liturgical Choir rehearses on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, followed directly by the 11:00 a.m. Mass. We meet one evening per month to prepare for special services and feast days.

The I.C. Chorus

The I.C. Chorus leads the music at the 5:00 p.m. liturgy at Immaculate Conception Church. The music covers a wide spectrum from Latin chants to anthems. We rehearse on Sundays at 4:30 p.m., just before the 5:00 p.m. Mass.

Vivace Liturgical Choir

The Vivace Liturgical Choir is an older-youth ensemble that also helps to lead the music at the monthly 11:00 a.m. Family Mass at St. Joseph Church. Vivace (which means ‘lively’ in Italian) invites singers and instrumentalists in grades 4-8 to participate in Music Ministry. Rehearsals are held after school at St. Joseph Church from 3:20-4:15 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons each month during the regular school year, and at 10:30 a.m. on the Sundays when the choir sings for the 11:00 a.m. Sunday liturgy.

Cantors and Instrumentalists

Cantors provide musical leadership at all Eucharistic liturgies, as well as Holy Days, wedding ceremonies, and special services. The Cantor ministry is open to qualified singers by audition. Instrumentalists compliment and support the singing of the choirs and congregation at Eucharistic liturgies every Sunday and on Holy Days. This ministry is open to qualified instrumentalists by audition. Strings, woodwinds, brass, guitar and percussion are all used throughout the year, and rehearsals are scheduled as needed.

Auditions

Auditions for instrumentalists, cantors, and choristers are held throughout the academic year by appointment. Auditions for cantors and choristers involve sight-reading and vocalization to determine range. Instrumental auditions require a short prepared piece and sight-reading. Auditions are held in the Music Office and last approximately 10 minutes. Thank you in advance for sharing your gifts!
